Middle School: Chiloquin, OR
Sunday, July 19 - Friday, July 24
Current 5th - 8th graders & Adult Chaperones

Eight St. Francis middle school youth three adults will travel to serve in the town of Chiloquin.

Where are we going?
Chiloquin is in south-eastern Oregon, just  north of Klamath Falls and upper Lake Klamath. The average high during the summer is 85°F and low is 40°F. The elevation in Chiloquin is 4,200 feet.  This rural town sits along the Sprague river valley surrounded by the Winema National Forest.

Who are we Serving?
This will be SSP's 8th summer working in Chiloquin continuously as a part of a long-time partnership with the United Methodist Church. Indeed many of our older St. Francis youth and young adults have served in our town in years past. In recent years, groups completed major downtown revitalization projects and worked for individual homeowners. We expect a similar mix of carpentry and painting projects this year.  During Adventure Wednesday, everyone serves together at Collier Memorial State Park. Teams clear brush to prevent forest fires which is a major concern to the area. In the afternoon, we relax by the river and enjoy a BBQ dinner. Thursday evening program is off site. Weather permitting, everyone drives to an overlook above Upper Klamath Lake with a great view of the sunset behind Mt. McLoughlin. This is a special time of personal reflection.

Where will we stay?
The lodgings for 2020 have not yet been announced but typically we stay in the high school gymnasium right in the center of town.

How will we get there?
Travel by vans driven by our adult chaperones  is included in the cost of the trip. We will depart at the crack of dawn on Sunday July 19, travel up the center of California on highway 5 and arrive in Chiloquin by 4 p.m. that day. To travel home we will depart Chiloquin on FRIDAY, July 24 and arrive home Friday evening.

High School: Smith River, CA
Sunday, July 19 - Saturday, July 25
Current 8th - 12th graders & Adult Chaperones

Eighteen St. Francis high school youth and 4 adults will road trip to Smith River in the north-western corner of California to serve in this rural community.

Where are we going?
Smith River is the last town you pass through when traveling up the coast of California along highway 101 before crossing into Oregon.  The average high during the summer is 65°F and low is 50°F. The area is beautiful and at times the days (and nights) can be chilly!

Who are we Serving?
Sierra Service Project is well known throughout Del Norte County for the home repair and community service work done by our volunteers. With only 28,000 residents, we have had a big impact in this beautiful and very rural area over the past five years. We work with residents and organizations in the coastal towns of Smith River, Fort Dick, and Crescent City as well as, at times, inland in Hiouchi and Gasquet. Because Del Norte County’s poverty rate is more than 20 percent and is one of the poorest counties in the State, we work with the entire community, including some families who are tribal members.  On Adventure Wednesday the full group volunteers with Tolowa Dunes Stewards on Adventure Wednesday removing invasive European beach grass which threatens the livelihood of native plants and animals. Youth learn about biodiversity and the importance of habitat for bees and other pollinators for the food system.

Where will we stay?
We are graciously hosted by the Smith River United Methodist Church and Smith River Community Hall which are a few blocks away from each other. We will eat meals at the church and shower in Crescent City at Del Norte High School.

How will we get there?
Travel by vans driven by our adult chaperones  is included in the cost of the trip. We will depart at the crack of dawn on Sunday July 19, travel up the coast of California on highway 101 and arrive in Smith River by 4 p.m. that day. To travel home we will depart Smith River on SATURDAY, July 25 and arrive home Saturday evening.

When can I register?
Both trips are full for youth and regular registration is closed. If your youth would like to be on the waiting list in case there is an opening due to a  drop fill out the registration below. We are still taking registrations for adult chaperones.

What is the role of the Adult Chaperones?
Adult chaperones are an essential part of the SSP team. You drive the vans, lead a youth work team and provide a caring and spiritual presence for our youth while they  are away from home. You will learn something about yourself, about your faith, about young people and about your ability to create community not to mention gain some skills you may or may not already have like carpentry, roofing or painting. I promise you a transformative experience.
