Community Outreach
Outreach is a vital and ongoing part of St. Francis. For many of our activities, the programs come to us and we provide the facilities. For example, the Girl Scouts of America, and many 12 Step recovery programs (see list below) regularly use our meeting rooms and parish hall. You will also find us beyond our church campus, out in the community, tangibly extending Christ's love by helping those in need. Some of these programs include:
Help Support Health Care Workers As COVID-19 continues to devastate communities, we want to rally behind *Health Care Workers who are on the front lines everyday. To do this, we have launched an initiative called St Francis Shop4Me Program that coordinates grocery shopping for the families of health care workers. Stories of those in health care risking exposure, and working extended hours/days surrounds us daily. We are seeking **HEALTHY volunteers from our community to:
Thank you! |

SANTA MARIA URBAN MINISTRY (SMUM) This diocesan outreach center in downtown San Jose is an important part of our community ministry. SMUM meets specific needs throughout the year. For example, we regularly collect food and clothing in our ongoing effort to provide for our neighbors in need. St. Francis parishioners annually donate supplies and backpacks for SMUM's Backpack Project which provides pre-filled backpacks to needy children. Our annual One Warm Coat drive supports SMUM from December to March by collecting gently used coats for SMUM's clients. We also collect toys to be given to the children at Christmas. SUSTAINING EARTH, OUR ISLAND HOME
Episcopal Climate Action App www.sustainislandhome.org Recently Nancy Grove visited to teach us about the Episcopal church's new online tool to support anyone who wants to make more life-giving choices about how we inhabit the earth. The Carbon Tracker helps individuals, households, and congregations to measure your carbon footprint and take steps to shrink it to fit a sustainable life. The app is organized around life choices ranging from Easy to Hard. Everyone will find something here from data and resources to online discussion. This is truly a community action. |
VILLAGE HOUSE DAY SHELTER Village House: An Interfaith Shelter of Hope is a daytime center at St. Francis that we host for a month in the fall and in the winter for as many as 15 delightful, medically fragile women. The center typically runs in fall and winter and is open Sunnday-Wednesdays each week. This remarkable effort to show God’s love provides a caring and loving environment. It’s the first 24-hour “safe space” some guests have had in years. More than 80 St. Francis members, along with neighbors and friends from Willow Glen and beyond, volunteered during our shelter-hosting rotation a year ago. Volunteers listen to stories. They provide feedback for guests attending community college or preparing for a job interview. Volunteers stay overnight or just for two hours. Many come away inspired by the shelter guests. If your job keeps you busy during the day, no problem! You can sign up to provide lunch or help at the overnight shelter. |
ST. FRANCIS WOLF PACKS
Wolf Packs are individual bags of food that can be given out to anyone in need. They are portable and non-perishable so they can be stored in your car. Please contact the office if you would like to take a few bags to distribute to someone in need. Financial donations are always accepted for this ministry, please note Wolf Packs in the memo line. |

Presiding Bishop calls country to ‘face painful truths,’ meet ‘abyss of anarchy’ with healing love [January 8, 2021]
Drawing on the words of Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King Jr., Presiding Bishop Michael Curry implored Americans to choose community over chaos in a message to The Episcopal Church as the United States reels from the Jan. 6 mob attack on the Capitol, incited by President Donald Trump and led by his supporters.
